Pretty Pretty Graphs

The new semester is in full swing and my networks management seminar is already on the get go for literature and data. Meanwhile I’ve been to New York City to pick up a copy of Tufte’s classic on The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, only to remind myself that networks are but pretty pretty graphs.

Two-Mode Wiki Network

Blue vertices are individuals, red vertices are wiki articles these individuals are working on. Imagine the corresponding one-mode networks of only individuals or articles, respectively. Not much terribly interesting information in these, but the two-mode network provides a rich rich and pretty pretty visualization of what’s going on in the corporate wiki.

Why Organizational Charts are Still Important

Here’s some food for thought: Organizational charts take on an important role in organizational change!

Why? Ask anyone to bring an organizational chart to the table and they’ll you that the chart focuses too much entirely on the boxes, that none of the most obvious lines are included, and that it is never up to date to begin with. All of it is true, of course. Still, organizational charts are important.
